AUSSIE EXPAT STUDY
Towards understanding the changing concept of citizenship in a global world: National identity and citizenship perceptions of Australian expatriates (UK and Singapore)
This is a University of Adelaide PhD project looking at Australian expatriates and the experience of living overseas, with a particular focus on national identity and citizenship practices. The research is exploring whether Australian expatriates’ national identity changes as a result of living overseas, and how relocating overseas might influence their ties to Australia and general feelings of “Australianness”.
Due to the scope of the research, this study will currently only be looking into Australians living in the UK and Singapore. If you are an Australian living in the UK or Singapore and think you might be interested in sharing your story, then please keep reading for more information!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME
My name is Anna Larson, and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide. My interest in Australian expats stems from my own expat upbringing. I want to take the interesting, transnational experience of Australian expats, and apply it to our understanding of citizenship and national identity in an increasingly globalised world.
PROJECT DETAILS
The primary research for this project is in the form of online interviews which take approximately one hour, and are done using the video-conferencing application, Zoom. During the interviews, participants will be asked questions about their national identity, ties to Australia and citizenship practices, as well as background questions regarding their expat experience.
The aim of the research is to get insight into the experiences of the Australian expat community, and to add to our changing understanding of citizenship and national identity in a world of migration. We hope to further our currently limited knowledge of the Australian expat population, by exploring their experiences and the influence that living a globalised life may have.
